China’s 100 most valuable brands revealed

The 2014 BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Chinese Brands study, commissioned by WPP and undertaken by Millward Brown, has shown that China is increasingly a consumer-driven market. China Mobile continues to be the nation’s most valuable brand, retaining the number one spot for the fourth year running with a value of $61.4 billion, up 21% on 2013. 

JWT names Gustavo Martinez as Global President

McCann Worldgroup’s Gustavo Martinez has been appointed Global President of JWT. In 2015 Martinez will take up the role of Worldwide CEO, succeeding Bob Jeffrey who will become Non-Executive Chairman. Bob Jeffrey said: “Over the past few years Gustavo and I have cultivated a relationship of mutual admiration and respect. He is passionate about the business, devoted to clients and understands that the key asset of the business is the caring, nurturing and understanding of its people. Gustavo Martinez is the future of JWT.” 

Xaxis and 24/7 Media to merge 

Xaxis, the world’s largest audience buying company, and 24/7 Media, a leader in digital marketing technology, have announced a merger that will bring together over 800 data and technology experts to help advertisers and publishers engage with audiences across all digital devices and channels. 
UK ad spending on the up

GroupM’s This Year, Next Year UK report has predicted that advertising spending in measured media in the UK will increase 7% this year, comfortably ahead of the world’s other large mature economies. Measured ad spend is expected to reach a total of £13.9 billion in 2013, up from £13.0 billion in 2012 and eclipsing the previous peak of £13.1 billion in 2007. 

Volvo has hired Grey London as its new global creative agency following a competitive pitch. The agency review focused on the launch of the next Volvo XC90, due to be introduced in 2014. Tomás Caetano, Vice President of Brand Marketing at Volvo Cars, commented: “Grey London is a partner that can help us to tell the true story of our brand and present our values beyond safety and reliability.”


Bottle Rocket crosses new frontier 

WPP has acquired Bottle Rocket, a full-service mobile solution provider in the US that creates high-quality iPhone, iPad and Android apps for leading brands. The company’s apps have won numerous industry accolades including multiple Apple Hall of Fame awards. The investment continues WPP’s strategy of strengthening the Group’s capabilities in digital media and mobile advertising. 

Y&R secures majority interest in Plasenta

Y&R has bought a majority stake in Istanbul-based Plasenta Conversation Agency. Founded in 2011, Plasenta specialises in social media monitoring and digital media projects, and clients include Coca-Cola, Vodafone and TEB BNP Paribas. 

Mindshare and Shazam launch AUDIO+

Mindshare Worldwide and Shazam, the world’s leading media engagement company, are launching AUDIO+, a programme to help leading brands audit, map and capitalise on the sound-based elements of their advertising campaigns. 

WPP takes majority stake in Cerebra Communications 

WPP has acquired a majority interest in Cerebra Communications, an integrated strategic communication agency based in Johannesburg. Cerebra will retain its independent positioning while working closely with other WPP companies across Africa. 

GreyPOSSIBLE acquires Media Republic 

GreyPOSSIBLE, the strategic partnership between Grey EMEA and POSSIBLE Worldwide, has acquired the business and assets of MR Development BV (Media Republic), a leading creative digital marketing company in the Netherlands. Media Republic will become part of GreyPOSSIBLE Benelux. 

VML to acquire Biggs|Gilmore

Leading digital marketing company VML (part of Y&R) has agreed to acquire Biggs|Gilmore Communications, a digital advertising and marketing agency in the United States. 


Maxus UK has launched Maxus For Business, a new division which will provide B2B brands with access to specialist expertise and the latest technology, as well GroupM’s buying scale. 

Technology PR agency AxiCom Cohn & Wolfe has opened a specialist policy and governance practice, which builds on the knowledge the agency has amassed through working with international organisations such as UN agencies and The International Chamber of Commerce. 

Ogilvy & Mather launches marketing analytics centre 

Ogilvy & Mather has launched a consumer insights and analytics centre in Singapore which will measure why certain brand campaigns are successful and others are not. The Marketing Analytics Centre of Excellence will serve Southeast Asia and has been created with the support of the Singapore Economic Development Board. 

MEC Access launched in Argentina 

Following successful launches in Mexico, Colombia and Uruguay, MEC has introduced MEC Access, the agency’s division focused on sports, entertainment, content and cause marketing, to Argentina.

[email protected], Ogilvy & Mather’s global media agency and performance marketing network, and the Smile Group, a company that specialises in building and partnering digital business, have announced a joint venture in India to strengthen Ogilvy’s performance marketing, ecommerce and mobile offerings. 

Hill+Knowlton Strategies has announced that it is unifying its 16 operations in Asia-Pacific into a new regional structure. Jack Martin, H+K’s Global Chairman and CEO, said: “This structure sets us up for long-term success in a way that makes sense for our regional leaders, talent and clients.” Vivian Lines, H+K’s Global Vice Chair, will serve as Chairman of the new APAC structure. 

Outrider to become part of the QUISMA network

Digital marketing agency network QUISMA has announced that Outrider, one of Sweden’s most successful online marketing agencies, has become part of its network and will be run under the name QUISMA Sweden. 
Studiocom to rebrand as VML

Studiocom, a digital marketing company based in Atlanta, is to be rebranded as VML. The Futures Company opens Asia-Pacific hub

The Futures Company has opened a new office in Singapore that will act as a hub for serving clients in Asia-Pacific. Stephane Alpern and Jeremy Sy, Asia-Pacific Managing Director and Director of Consulting respectively, will lead the Singapore office. 


Zombie and cannibal products killing consumer brands

A study by TNS of almost 3,500 new consumer goods launches in the UK has shown that 60% were either “zombie” or “cannibal” products which failed to provide long-term growth or ate into companies’ profits from existing products. Only 15% of the launches were what TNS terms “expansion innovations”: new products that attract sales and add to a company’s existing revenues. 

Time-shifted TV viewing becoming the norm 

Newly released insights from Kantar Media’s futurePROOF study reveal that whilst most people in the UK currently prefer to watch TV at the time of broadcast, the signs are that this will soon change, with “time-shifting” set to become the default behaviour for most viewers. 


Kantar Retail has released the 2013 PoweRanking study, which identifies the best manufacturers and retailers in the US as ranked by their trading partners, provides insights into what makes them the best and highlights key areas for improvement. 


Southeast Asian companies need to create a regional game plan, map out an M&A strategy and start investing more in branding over the next two years if they want emerge as regional leaders when the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Economic Community comes into effect in 2015, according to a report by JWT Asia Pacific and management consulting firm AT Kearney., the audio book arm of, has released a new audio re-enactment of the 1945-1946 Nuremberg Trials that is largely based on the daily reports written by Burson-Marsteller founding Chairman Harold Burson and a colleague when they were correspondents covering the trials for American Forces Network radio. The release of Report from Nuremberg: The International War Crimes Trial marks the first time the verbatim text of the reports have been published since being read on air by network announcers during the trials. 


When it comes to buying a new car, China is creating a new breed of savvy shopper eager to find the best deal, according to the latest results from The Automotive Path to Purchase Study conducted by TNS. The study found that over three-quarters of Chinese car buyers were prompted to part with their money by a special deal or promotion, compared to just 39% in 2012, and shoppers are taking up to 40% longer to make a decision than they were a year ago.

JWT Cairo’s Vodafone “Fakka” campaign won a Gold and the Grand Prix at the American Association of Advertising Agencies’ (4A’s) Jay Chiat Awards for Strategic Excellence in Advertising. The campaign also won a Gold at the LIA Awards and three Golds and a Grand Prix at the GEMAS Effies.

Other winners at the GEMAS Effies included JWT Jeddah which won a Gold, JWT Dubai which won a Gold and a Silver, and JWT Riyadh which won two Silvers.

JWT Shanghai won three Golds and four Silvers at the China International Advertising Festival, while JWT Toronto won a Silver at the London International Awards.


At the 2013 Global Awards Ogilvy CommonHealth Worldwide won a Grand Global Award and two Global Awards.


Earn Your Wings, a game created by Spafax for Air Canada, placed first in the Special Online Section/Microsite category in this year’s Min Editorial and Design Awards.

Spafax won nine awards at the annual Pearl Awards, including three Golds and four Silvers, while its digital magazine Sparksheet took home six awards in the B2B category at the Canadian Online Publishing Awards.


Farrokh Madon, Chief Creative Officer at Y&R Singapore, has been named Creative Director of the Year at the Institute of Advertising Singapore’s Hall of Fame Awards.

At the El Ojo Awards Y&R Sao Paulo took home two Golds and six Silvers, and Y&R Prolam scooped five Golds and five Silvers, as well as winning the awards for Best Chilean Agency, Best Creative Director and Best Latin Audiovisual Production. Y&R Sao Paulo was also a big winner at the Columnistas Awards, taking home three Golds and seven Silvers.

Y&R Germany won a Silver at the GWA Effies, while Y&R Prague took home a Gold at the Czech Effies.

At the Top/Com Grand Prix Y&R Paris took home a Grand Prix and a Silver, and at the Promax 2013 Awards RKCR/Y&R won Gold for their work for Children in Need.

George Patterson Y&R dominated the ADMA Awards, scooping a total of 17 honours including the much coveted Agency of the Year Award and the David Ogilvy Creative Award.

BVRG Burson-Marsteller was the most awarded public relations agency at the Baltic PR Awards, which included being named Baltic PR Agency of the Year.

VML Poland’s CEO Dariusz Andrian and Chief Strategy Officer Michal Wolniak were jointly honoured as Persons of the Year at the 2013 IAB Mixx Awards for being pioneers of digital marketing in Poland. 

NATIVE VML was named Best Digital Agency at the Bookmarks 2013, while Managing Director Jarred Cinman walked away with the award for Best Individual Contribution to SA Digital Media and Marketing, and Cape Town Group Account Director Elizabeth Janse van Rensburg received the Best Client Service award.

VML Qais was recognized at the 2013 W³ Awards with a Silver in the General Website category.

Blast Radius Paris won a Gold at the Epica Awards 2013 in the Branded Entertainment category.

Wunderman Lisbon won the Grand Prix and two Gold Trophies at the 2013 Effectiveness Awards, while Phantasia, a Wunderman affiliate based in Lima, was crowned IAB Digital Agency of the Year.

Gary Laben, KBM Group CEO and President of Wunderman Data & Insights, received the Direct Marketing Club of New York’s Silver Apple Award, which recognises direct marketers who have distinguished themselves in their craft as well as by their involvement in the community.
